Billy Huddleston missing posts circulating online this week describe a case from July 2000, not a new disappearance. Billy, a 12-year-old from Oakboro, North Carolina, was reported missing on July 25, 2000, and his body was found three days later. Is Billy Huddleston missing now?
No. Some recent web and Facebook posts use present-tense wording that makes the case sound new. The reporting we reviewed all traces back to 2000. If you see a post saying otherwise, check it against a local news outlet or the sheriff’s office before sharing it.
What happened in July 2000
Billy’s family reported him missing on July 25, 2000. The Charlotte Observer reported at the time that he was last seen getting into a small red or burgundy car in Oakboro. Stanly County Sheriff Tony Frick said police had interviewed more than 200 people and called in the FBI and the State Bureau of Investigation to help process evidence.
His body was found late on July 28 in a cornfield next to Love Mill Road, just across the Union County line. Authorities said at the time that there was no obvious trauma and that no weapon had been recovered.
His grandmother, Bessie Huddleston, told the Observer she had spent 31 hours in the same chair waiting for news. “I was holding out hope up until the very end that he’d be coming home,” she said.

The arrest
Bobby Richard Taylor Jr., 30, of Oakboro was arrested on Aug. 4, 2000, and charged with first-degree murder. He lived at the home where Billy’s green bicycle was found. Sheriff Frick said Taylor told police that Billy had asked to leave the bike in his yard before getting into a car.
Residents said Taylor had helped with the search, including handing out fliers. The Observer also reported that he had first given police an alias and that a Virginia warrant was active for failing to appear in court there in 1996.
Why the cause of death stayed unknown
The pathologist called the death a homicide based on the circumstances, but found nothing to show what killed him, the Observer reported in December 2000. That month, prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty. Taylor’s lawyer said he intended to plead not guilty.
How the case ended
The Cinemaholic reports that Taylor pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, received life in prison without parole, and is held at Marion Correctional Institution in North Carolina. We could not confirm that against court or prison records, and we found no contemporary news report of the plea.
