The Rim shooting usually refers to the killing of Savawn Kyle, a 26-year-old San Antonio rapper who was shot in his Porsche at The Rim shopping center on Dec. 8, 2019, with his 8-year-old son beside him. Nearly seven years later, we could find no public report of an arrest or charge in his death. The most recent appeal we found offers up to $5,000 for information that leads to one.

What happened on Dec. 8, 2019
Kyle was driving a white Porsche through The Rim with his son, near restaurants close to La Cantera Parkway, when a dark sedan pulled up on the driver’s side. The people in the sedan opened fire on the Porsche and left toward I-10 West, according to a Crime Stoppers release reported by KSAT.
“Two hands outside the vehicle and just two guns just going at it,” one witness told KSAT. “It’s surreal and it’s just scary.”
Kyle was hit and his son was not hurt. Police said the shooting was not random and believed Kyle was the target. He died the next morning. KSAT reported that the car may have been a Toyota Corolla with at least three people inside, while a later KSAT report said at least two. Spectrum News reported two or three suspects.
Kyle’s father, OC Rodriguez, told KSAT they were at The Rim because it was the boy’s birthday and Kyle was taking him shopping.

Who was Savawn Kyle?
Kyle was a local rapper known as MG Vahn, and a former Roosevelt High School football player, according to his father. He released a video for his song “Apparently” about a month before he died, and the Porsche in it was the car he was shot in, his father told KSAT.
He first drew wide attention after his arrest in the Oct. 25, 2016, killing of Renard Smith, 29, outside a Northeast Side food mart. On his perp walk he told reporters to go get his mixtape, and the clip went viral. The murder charge was dismissed on Sept. 24, 2018, pending further investigation.
In 2019, Spectrum News reported that the motive for Kyle’s killing was unclear. We found no later public statement from police naming one. His father said he believed jealousy was behind it. “We know he didn’t do it, and the courts proved that,” Rodriguez said of the earlier case.
The ballistics link to South Park Mall
Ten days after Kyle was killed, four people were shot at South Park Mall in San Antonio. An arrest affidavit said casings from the mall were tested through the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, and that testing indicated one of the guns used there was the same gun used to kill Kyle.
That link has limits, and they matter:
- It connects a gun, not a person. News 4 San Antonio noted that the affidavit did not say whether the man it concerned fired that gun in both shootings.
- KSAT reported that police could not confirm whether the two shootings were related.
- Four people were arrested in the mall case, and KSAT reported that the first two were not charged in Kyle’s death. We found no report of anyone being charged in it since.
Where the case stands in 2026
The public record thins out after 2022. These are the latest updates we could find:
- December 2020: Kyle’s mother, Latonya Kyle, told KSAT detectives were not following up on her leads and that she had hired a private investigator. The detective on the case said they were actively working to solve it.
- October 2021: KSAT reported that police were still searching for the shooter or shooters.
- November 2022: Crime Stoppers publicized a reward of up to $5,000.
We found no newer report as of Nov. 1, 2026. That does not prove nothing has happened, because sealed filings and quiet progress would not appear in the press. We did not check Bexar County court records directly.

The Rim and San Antonio crime in 2026
The Rim’s biggest headline of 2026 was weather, not crime. The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado on July 15 that dissipated just north of the center, with peak winds estimated at up to 100 mph. Axios reported that The Rim was hit hard, with downed trees and property damage, though some businesses stayed open.
Citywide, homicides have fallen steadily since a 2022 peak. KSAT’s count of cases handled by SAPD shows:
| Year | Homicides handled by SAPD |
|---|---|
| 2020 | 128 |
| 2021 | 160 |
| 2022 | 231 |
| 2023 | 165 |
| 2024 | 127 |
| 2025 | 105 |
| 2026, through September | 80 |
The 2026 figure comes from the San Antonio Report, which said the city could finish under 100 homicides for the first time since 2015, when SAPD reported 94. The yearly counts are subject to change as investigations continue.
