What police say happened

Sweetwater police and Miami-Dade Fire crews were called to the mall after reports of a possible shooting, CBS Miami reported. The call came in around 7:30 p.m., according to Local 10.

“Following a thorough initial assessment, [officers] confirmed that no shooting occurred,” Sweetwater police said in a statement quoted by CBS Miami.

WSVN reported that social media video appears to show a physical fight between multiple men before one pulls a gun from his waistband and others run. Officers with long guns were later seen in the area.

Why it was reported as a shooting

A gun was reportedly displayed and people ran, which is enough to set off 911 calls and social media posts before anyone can check the facts. Early posts online described gunshots. Police later said no shooting occurred.

Dolphin Mall’s history of false shooting reports

Miami New Times wrote in 2024 that the mall “has repeatedly been plagued by false shooting reports.” This week’s scare follows a clear pattern, although it differs in one way: this time a gun was reportedly seen.

Date What was reported What police found
August 2017 Crowds ran for the exits, screaming that shots were being fired “No shots, no casings and no shooter,” the police chief said
April 2018 Panic and reports of shots fired on a busy Saturday night A fight was mistaken for gunfire, and one man was arrested
November 2022 Shoppers fled the food court after reports of shots No shots were fired; police looked into a stolen car
April 2024 Reports of an active shooter and an evacuation Reports were unfounded, and New Times said the cause was an altercation
Nov. 1, 2026 Reports of a possible shooting No shooting occurred; one person in custody

Not every report near the mall has been false. In March 2026, Local 10 reported an arrest after a road rage shooting near the mall. That was a separate case, outside the shopping center.

What has not been confirmed

  • The name of the person in custody
  • Any charges
  • What started the fight
  • Whether anyone was hurt in the fight. The reports we reviewed describe no injuries but do not state this directly.
  • Whether the mall closed or how long the response lasted
